TikTok Offers Users Authority to Limit AI-Generated Media in Personal Streams

TikTok is introducing a new feature that permits them to cut down on the volume of AI-created videos appearing in their streams. This initiative comes as the company announced that it currently hosts over 1 thousand million content made with AI.

Trial and Implementation

The update is undergoing trials over the next few weeks before a global launch. This development aligns with a rise in AI content, spurred by emerging content generation software.

AI Proliferation Online

It has been noted that almost a tenth of the quickest rising channels on another major platform exclusively feature content made by AI. A large amount of this material is considered low-quality AI content, a phrase for poor-quality, mass-produced content that is often nonsensical or surreal.

Based on user feedback that many people appreciate content made with AI tools, from AI artwork to informative clips, and we intend to offer the community the power to increase or decrease of that, based on their own likes,” stated a spokesperson.

AI on the Platform

TikTok disclosed that there are now 1.3bn videos on its network labeled as made with AI. Collectively, over 100 million videos are uploaded to the service each day, making clips made by AI a relatively small part of its overall inventory.

How to Adjust Settings

Users will be able to limit or boost the amount of AI content they view by accessing the topic control feature in the platform and picking the AI content topic. Other topics that can already be controlled under the setting include news, clothing, aesthetics, and choreography.

AI Disclosure Rules

Its rules mandate creators to identify “realistic” artificially created content, and it forbids dangerous deepfakes of public figures or crisis events. Any believable artificial content that is not labeled can be deleted under its user guidelines.

Additionally, the app will now add an “AI-made” label to content produced via its proprietary AI systems, or detected by an collaborative effort for spotting artificial media. This measure is aimed to help prevent users from attempting to bypass the disclosure requirement.

AI Literacy Programs

The platform is also launching a $2m AI literacy fund for specialists and groups to produce informative material about using AI responsibly. This initiative will assist educational bodies specializing in teaching computer science.

Platform Protection

The platform has justified its safety measures, following discussion over plans to cut jobs for a large number of safety staff in Britain. TikTok is set to eliminate a significant number of roles in its content moderation division in the UK capital, with labor groups and internet security professionals raising concerns that staff are being displaced by AI moderation.

A senior executive explained that human moderation would still have a role, but artificial intelligence can shield workers by filtering out the most harmful content prior to it gets reviewed by humans. The company stated a notable drop in explicit and harmful content handled by human moderators over the past year due to the use of its AI tools.

It is vital to combine humans and technology to keep the platform safe,” the executive stated. “We’ll have people as integral to the approach, but we further consider it’s very important to minimize viewing of harmful content as rapidly, which is why a significant AI assistance is making a difference operate efficiently.”
