Israel Attacks Iranian Territory as Blasts Reported in Tehran

Early Saturday, accounts surfaced of major blasts rocking Tehran, amid statements from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preventative strike.

Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran

As per eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were heard in the city on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, two plumes of dense smoke were observed rising over the centre and east of the city.

“The type of these blasts suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency reported, without immediately offer further details.

Context: Rising Strains and Recent Developments

The incident occurs against a background of severely escalated strains in the Middle East. Major developments leading up to this strike involve:

  • American Naval Deployment: A massive build-up of American warships in the region, featuring the movement of carrier strike groups.
  • Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent discussions between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with indications of more talks planned.
  • Official Rhetoric: Prior to the strike, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
  • Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or face severe consequences.

Iranian Response

Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had accused the US of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. Officials rejected assertions about missile development and protest deaths as unfounded.

These developments remains fast-moving, with additional reports expected as events unfold.
